Traffic Accident Statistics

This section provides statistics on road traffic accident figures involving personal injuries, and the numbers of casualties in Hong Kong for the past 10 years. The traffic accident data are inputted by the Police into its database which is linked with the database in the Transport Information System of the Transport Department.

The Road Safety and Standards Division of the Transport Department has been closely monitoring the trends of accident statistics and analysing the accident data, as well as making reference to practices and experiences of other areas from time to time, in order to formulate and implement appropriate road safety strategies and measures, including legislation amendment, transport infrastructure improvement, and publicity and education. Accident data are also used to identify locations of traffic accident blacksites, thereby devising and implementing appropriate preventive and remedial measures at these locations.

There were 17,831 road traffic accidents involving personal injuries in 2021, of which 1,824 were serious and 94 were fatal. The total number of fatal and serious road traffic accidents decreased by 4.5 per cent compared with 2020.
