Registration and Licensing of Vehicles and Drivers
This Section provides statistics on the number of vehicles registered and licensed, drivers, learner drivers as well as driving tests in Hong Kong.
As at the end of 2024, the number of registered motorised and non-motorised vehicles was 917,703, representing a decrease of about 2.07% compared to that of 2023 and a growth of 12.7% over the past 10 years since 2015. The number of licensed motorised and non-motorised vehicles reached 818,648 by the end of 2024, representing a decrease of 0.98% in comparison to 2023.
Regarding driving licences, there were about 2,493,000 full driving licence holders, representing a growth of 2.76% and 19.74% compared to the numbers in 2023 and 2014 respectively.
To meet the increasing demand for licensing services, the Transport Department has introduced a number of measures to enable the public to apply for licensing services more conveniently through various channels. These measures include the implementation of the queue ticketing, allowing same-day queue ticket holders to avoid staying and waiting at the Licensing Offices. Currently, apart from using the counter services at the Licensing Offices in person or by agent, members of the public can also obtain most of the licensing services by post or using the drop-in boxes at the Licensing Offices.
Besides, applications for the renewal of vehicle and driving licences, certificate of particulars of motor vehicle, applications for personalised vehicle registration marks and traditional vehicle registration marks for allocation through auction, notification of address change, and booking of driving test, etc., can be made online through GovHK website.
