The questions of the Part A Written Test are based on the "Road Users' Code". Candidates need to be conversant with the code before taking the test. The code would be distributed during first-time application for learner's driving licence or for driving test of non-commercial vehicles. Below are the test criteria:-

The Part A Written Test is held at the written test centre of the Transport Department. The address of the written test centre and the Driving Test Appointment Office is:

• 2/F Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon.

The Part A Written Test is computerized. Candidates can familiarize themselves with the interface of the computerized written test and practise the touch screen features by using the Kiosks located at the Driving Test Appointment Office.

When attending the Part A Written Test, candidates can select Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese or English on the computer screen as the test language.

Part A Written Test candidates with special needs to take the test using the audio system can apply in writing to the Driving Test Appointment Office for an audio written test before purchasing the driving test form. The Computerized Written Test System provides audios soundtracks of Cantonese, Putonghua or English. When attending the audio written test, candidates can choose to listen to one of the languages among Cantonese, Putonghua or English, and select the correct answer via the touch screen. The time allowed for the test is also 20 minutes.

In addition, candidates who do not understand Chinese or English, if in need, can apply in writing to the Driving Test Appointment Office for an oral written test before purchasing the driving test form. Candidates are required to hire an interpreter recognized by the government for their language to orally interpret the questions in the test paper and are liable to all costs incurred. The oral written test is conducted in paper mode. The time allowed for the test is 40 minutes, and the entire examination process will be recorded by a voice recorder.

• After arriving at the Transport Department in Cheung Sha Wan, please wait at the Driving Test Appointment Office lobby first.
• When the announcement is made to call candidates for your test time, please switch off the mobile phone and all electronic devices with alarm functions (e.g. smart watches), and then queue up to enter the written test waiting area.
• In the written test waiting area, please pay attention to the test instructions explained by the invigilators, and then enter the examination room for registration as indicated by the invigilators.
• After completing the registration, candidates will be assigned to a computer. After settling down, candidates can follow the computer instructions to take the written test.
• After the test is finished, please pay attention to the instructions on the computer screen for collecting the results.
